Hope Harbour - A brief history

There has been a fishing industry in Hope Cove for hundreds of years. As the cove is open to the elements, especially in westerly winds, it was decided to build a breakwater to protect the fishing boats. The breakwater was completed in 1925 and the harbour area is leased from crown estates. The harbour is managed by a group of harbour commissioners who represent the harbour users. The commissioners have the right to enforce local bye- laws. They are also responsible for maintenance and repairs. Harbour masters are employed to collect Harbour Dues and ensure the safety of harbour users. At present, the commissioners are working on a scheme to enhance sea defences. This will take the form of rock armour to the seaward side of the breakwater. Work is at an early stage but progress is being made. Although the harbour is managed locally, as with all trust ports, it adheres to guidelines set down by the Department of Transport.

Harbour Information

Arriving to store/launch your vessel

We ask that all boats on road trailers that are launched and retrieved by vehicle are done so via Inner Hope slipway. Please remove your car and trailer from the sand immediately after launching and adhere to 5 mph when driving on the sand. It is recommended to have a banksman when reversing.
Please place you launch fee in the red honesty box in the wall – below are the harbour dues. If possible wrap a note onto it with the boat name, however we usually come over for collection when we see you.
If you need to put your boat on the main Harbour Beach, please try to avoid our busy time of mid-day/afternoon. New arrivals must always ask permission from the Harbour Master before driving onto the sand.
If the Harbour Masters are not available you may place your vessel on the main Harbour beach but please find us as soon as possible.
The Harbour can be extremely busy, particularly in the high season, so please navigate with care and consideration, adhere to the speed limit within the yellow markers buoys (5 knots), minimise wake, wear lifejackets, and connect a kill cord to yourself when helming a vessel with an outboard engine.

An identification tag will be issued. Those paying to lock onto the chain in the harbour will have this fee included in their harbour dues.

All kayaks and SUPs left on the harbour beach (not chained or in a boat) overnight must pay the relevant dues or will be removed incurring a double charge.
